More Norfolk

We decided to stay an extra day in Norfolk, due to high winds around Cape Charles VA. Fortunately, Waterside Marina could accommodate us, even with a Great Loop Rendezvous event starting on Sunday.

On the way to the Chrysler Glass Studio, which was hosting a sale of pieces by artists in residence, we stopped at the Glasslight Hotel and Gallery. The collection of modern glass sculptures was incredible, and rivals any I have seen in a private gallery.

Here are a few of examples:

Afterwards, we  toured the Victorian-era Hunter House. Built in1894, it was the residence of the Hunter family. Their son, James Hunter Jr, was a physician trained at UVA who also obtained specialty degrees in medicine at Harvard University. He was one of the first cardiologists in Norfolk in the early 1900s, and the first radiologist. The display of his medical instruments includes a blood pressure device and an early EKG machine!

The house was eventually bequeathed to a historical foundation after being owned only by this single family. It is exceptionally well-preserved, with an extensive collection of every-day artifacts. We were lucky to have Renee, the Director of Collections, as a tour guide. Lunch was at aLatte Cafe.

While Captain Don returned to Allure to research our pesky oil leak in the sail drive, I toured the Meyer House. The Meyers were Norfolk’s first Jewish family, and the house was built in 1794. It has also undergone extensive restoration and preservation, with an amazing collection of original furnishings and artifacts of daily life. The docent commented that Norfolk has preserved some of its oldest buildings, while nearby Virginia Beach demolished almost all of its historic homes in the 70s to make way for development.

We chose the Mermaid Winery and Bistro for dinner, which turned out to be an excellent choice. Plus, the decor is fabulous! [Press PLAY on the second image to see the lighting effects.]

  1. Looks as if your extra day there was worthwhile & enjoyable. Beautiful glass objects, so many amazing artists & touring the period house of the doctor, how medicine has made so much stride through the years.
The mermaid is beautiful & looks like such a nice place to end the day.
