The Journey Begins

MM 948

Actually, the trip up the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) started in Miami on October 31, 2023. But that was a prelude to the 4-6 week trip from our over-winter location in Vero Beach Fl to the Eastern shore of Maryland in Rock Hall.

More about that later, but today we fueled and left Loggerhead marina around noon to time our arrival at the Wabasso Bridge close to low tide. Our mast is ICW compatible (able to clear 65’ bridges), but just barely and we have learned (as have many before us) that a 65 foot bridge clearance is more of a suggestion than a guarantee. When your antennae tops out at 64.5 feet, small variations can make a difference. Fortunately, Captain Don changed the antennae in Miami to a whip for the for the last 1.5 feet. We tickled the bottom supports of a couple of bridges already, including the Wabasso.

Loggerhead Marina, in the Gulf Harbor Golf and Tennis community, was a beautiful location to overwinter. For reference, it’s at Atlantic ICW statute mile mark 948 (think of it as mile markers on the highway; it started at Norfolk with MM 0). Rock Hall is another 150 miles past Norfolk. Whew!

We also enjoyed a final lunch with cousins Dawn and Cheryl, and Aunt Rozena the week we left. Don was so lucky!

We anchored at Serenity Island in the Indian River at MM 925. It was a short day, kind of a warm-up day with a lot of wind and a bit cool on the water. We cooked on board and prepared for an early start to Friday.

And, oh yeah, AIS stopped transmitting as we left the dock today! (It’s a tracking system for boats, very useful for communicating with other vessels). Captain has been trying to perform diagnostics but no result yet. Stay tuned …
