First Encounter with a Dredge

Fernandina Beach Visitor Center

Before departing Fernandina Beach, I was able to attend a wonderful Gentle Flow yoga class at Centred Yoga in town. I highly recommend this studio with plenty of helpful props and excellent instruction. It felt good to thoroughly stretch after a few days on the boat.

Captain Don had checked out route the day before, as he always does. We knew that we should expect a dredging operation on the inside of Cumberland Island GA, which we encountered around mile marker 703.

Dredging in progress on ICW

The equipment occupied about 80% of the channel, and the water depth was about 3’ outside the channel. In addition, the dredge’s anchor extended beyond the apparatus, so caution was needed. We passed by slowly without incident, but it required getting pretty close to the equipment.

We arrived at Jekyll Harbor Marina at 3pm, having caught another good current but losing time around the dredge and some tight passes.

The marina has bikes and a golf cart for guest use, so we biked over to Jekyll Island Club Resort, where we stayed on our bike trip a year-and-a-half ago. Thinking of you, Peter and Gail, from our time together on that awesome vacation!
